2024 was a year with a harsh, long winter and quite a lot of rain. A spring that was virtually absent and a fairly mild summer, with a few very hot days.
Cercial (Branco) is a grape variety planted primarily in the Bairrada and Dão regions. It is a very productive variety that ripens early and yields aromatic, fresh wines with a high alcohol content. Not to be confused with Sercial (Cerceal/Esgana Cão): This grape has become famous as one of the noble grape varieties of Madeira, where it produces the driest style of Madeira wine. On the mainland, it is also known as Esgana Cão, which means "dog suffocator" due to its extremely high acidity. The confusion is often compounded by the fact that Cerceal is sometimes used as a synonym for Sercial on Madeira, whereas Cercial branco on the mainland is a different grape.
