This white is a blend of two grapes native to the region, Antao Vaz and Arinto; its ripe white fruits, filled out with yellow plums, and perfumed acidity make for a wine that has weight and concentration, with spice and pepper coming through on the finish.
These wines refer to the Carthusian monks who, since 1598, lead a solitary life of prayer in the monastery of Santa Maria Scala Coeli, in Evora, in the heart of the Alentejo. The monastery is the only one of the Carthusian order in Portugal and was founded in 1587. It houses eleven monks who stay in seclusion every day except on Sunday because they take a walk through the vineyards in the immediate vicinity. The order numbered about 370 monks and 75 monials in 2006. The mother house of the Carthusian Order is the Grande Chartreuse in the Grenoble area. Furthermore, the order has 24 monasteries spread over three continents.
