Golden in color. Aroma with notes of smoke, sweet grass, dried tobacco leaf, quince, wax, cedarwood, light varnish, and nuts. Taste with layers of citrus and salted caramel. Well-defined acidity in a fresh, lingering dry finish. Due to its sweet style, this is the ideal wine for beginners; the wine is medium sweet and aromatic with a beautiful balance between sweet and sour.
Food-pairing
Perfect as an aperitif, but also an excellent accompaniment to various dishes. Think of oxtail soup (not in it, but alongside!), shrimp or asparagus cream soup, lobster with tarragon vinaigrette, and Caesar salad. Also surprisingly beautiful with smoked duck with mango chutney, pigeon with macadamia and star anise, or even Peking duck—to name just a few. A harmonious alliance with roasted hazelnuts, which enhance the aromatic depth. Comes into its own beautifully with creamy quark, refined aged cheeses, and cheeses with a subtle sweet, nutty character. Elegant partner to smoked salmon, a refined shrimp cocktail with fresh Granny Smith, mussels, and finely prepared sardines. Versatile and refined with poultry, duck, pork, and a pure steak. A classic and particularly successful combination with smoked ham. Outstanding with swordfish served with banana and passion fruit—an iconic and typical Madeira dish in which sweet and sour complement each other perfectly. Baked pineapple also makes a surprisingly elegant pairing.
Grapes: Verdelho 100%
This Frasqueira is the result of blending two wines, both from the same vineyards, but with completely different aging and development stages. In the 1993 harvest, part of the Verdelho must was brought from Seixal to our winery in Funchal. Here, we controlled the fermentation, fortifying it to 1.8° Baumé. The remaining portion remained in the MEF winery, where it was fortified after complete fermentation. This portion remained in the MEF warehouse by the sea until it was used in 2025 in a 60/40 blend with Verdelho from our warehouses. By adding more MEF wine, we sought to enhance the salinity and acidity of this Frasqueira. In February 2025, 500 750ml units were bottled.

Store & Serve
Always store Madeira upright. Due to its pronounced acidity, prolonged contact with the cork can damage it if the bottle is stored lying down. The ideal serving temperature for Verdelho is between 14 and 16°C.
Madeira undergoes prolonged aging in an oxidative environment and continues to evolve after bottling under reductive conditions. It is therefore advisable to open the bottle a few hours before serving so that the wine can develop optimally. Once opened, Madeira distinguishes itself by its exceptional aging potential: the influence of oxygen is negligible, meaning the wine remains virtually indefinitely shelf-stable. In fact, over time—even after a few months—it can gain in complexity and harmony, and often present itself even more beautifully than at the moment of opening.
