NCGH01 Graham's Port Colheita 1950

The deep auburn centre reflects the wine’s amazing concentration, while the pale ochre rim signals its venerable age. A flourish of aromas reveals walnuts, soft caramel and honey notes, demerara, citrus preserves and cigar box scents. The voluptuous palate — simultaneously intense and delicate — unravels layers of refined, rich citrus fruit and soft caramel, with a beam of freshness providing exquisite balance. Pleasant traces of tobacco leaf and mocha make for a lingering finale.

The Master pays tribute to the three generations of winemakers and Cellar Masters who contributed to its prolonged ageing in the cellars, carefully nurturing it until it’s release. It celebrates perfection and complexity. In 1950 World War II was still a recent memory, Europe was slowly rebuilding its ravaged economy and many port producers ceased to exist. Given the prevailing economic climate as the time, which made it difficult to keep large stocks of wine for ageing over prolonged periods, only limited quantities of the best parcels of the 1950 harvest were set aside for long-term ageing and very little has reached us. Charles Symington has now decided to release just half of our very last cask.

The other two Tawny Ports in the collection are The Apprentice – 1994, and The Artisan – 1974. Together, these three wines celebrate the craftsmanship of those involved in ageing Graham’s Single Harvest Tawny Ports over decades.

Almost never bottled. According to Johnny Symington, managing director of the Symington family, so little wine was kept in casks in the 1950s and 60s because everything was bottled as quickly as possible for sale. It is therefore pure luck that these casks still exist and that the wine has not been processed into blends over the years. Charles Symington stated that about half a cask remains, just enough for one final bottling. Whoever manages to get their hands on one will truly have a piece of history in their cellar!
