Grapes: Old Vines

From a single parcel of very old vines, Vinha da Granja, planted in 1929. A field blend of 34 diferent grape varieties, predominant is Tinta Roriz (19%), Tinta Amarela (19%), Touriga Franca (18%), Touriga Nacional (8%) & Moreto (7%).

After a 14-day fermentation with very little extraction, the grapes ripen for about 18 months in new 225 liter french oak barrels. 

Quinta do Vallado, built in 1716, is one of the oldest and most famous farms in the Douro Valley.

 

The new vines were planted using only one variety on each plot, breaking with the old tradition of mixing different varieties on the same plot. Today, Quinta do Vallado has 10 hectares of old vines planted between the 1920s and 1950s, including Vinha da Granja, 1929, and Vinha da Coroa, 1958. The remaining 55 hectares of vineyards were planted more recently in the 1990s.
