TAC032 Quinta da Pellada Casa & Mata 2016 Red

Quinta da Pellada Casa & Mata is a wine that perfectly expresses the power and elegance of its unique terroir. Aged for 28 months in carefully selected French oak barrels, it reflects both precision and patience in its making. Sourced from the most sun-exposed parcel of Pellada, where granite soils are enriched with clay and striking veins of pink and white quartz, this wine benefits from exceptional ripeness and concentration. The result is a beautifully structured and characterful expression of the estate.

In the glass, it reveals a deep, intense grená hue. The ароматic profile is rich and layered, with refined notes of bergamot tea, violet, orange peel, and ripe fruit, subtly enhanced by hints of cocoa and vanilla from its oak ageing. On the palate, it is remarkably expressive, combining elegance with depth. Generous yet polished tannins provide structure and balance, leading to a long, sophisticated finish. A wine of distinction, crafted for those who appreciate complexity, finesse, and a true sense of place.

Grapes: 100% Field Blend.
The field blend comes from a single plot with old vines. It is estimated that there are around 47 different grape varieties, primarily Alfrocheiro, Touriga Nacional, and Baga. Sustainably cultivated vines are planted on granite soil with sand and clay layers and a strong presence of pink and white quartz, at an altitude of 550 meters. This wine is yet another example of the lessons the winery is learning about terroir: this plot in Pellada is the most exposed of the three and has a more compact soil with some clay alongside granite, an intense presence of white and pink quartz, and a high number of sunshine hours per day. The wine has aged for approximately 28 months in eight-year-old French barrels.

The historic estate, Quinta da Pellada, first mentioned in 1527, is located near Vila Nova de Tazém and is considered today one of the iconic references within the revival of Dão wines. In 1980, Álvaro de Castro inherited the estate and decided to dedicate himself entirely to restoring and refining the centuries-old family tradition in viticulture.

Today, he continues this vision together with his daughter Maria, trained as an oenologist, who, together with a small and dedicated team, gives the estate a contemporary interpretation without losing sight of the heritage.

The wines of Quinta da Pellada are characterized by a philosophy of minimal intervention and a deep respect for nature and terroir. Old vineyards, often more than 70 years old and planted with a rich mix of indigenous grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Jaen, Alvarelhão, Tinta Pinheira, and Tinta Amarela, form the soul of the estate. The granite-rich soils, combined with the cooling influence of surrounding valleys and pronounced temperature differences between day and night, produce wines with refined minerality, freshness, and remarkable precision. The result is elegant, characterful wines with aging potential, which reflect not only the unique terroir of the Dão but also the Castro family's continued dedication to authenticity, craftsmanship, and timeless quality.
