Niepoort Poeirinho is a wine with a story rooted deep in Portuguese history. "Poeirinho" is the ancient name for the Baga grape — a tribute to the great Bairrada wines of the past, light in colour and alcohol, but with remarkable ageing potential. Dirk Niepoort, whose family has been crafting wines since 1842, was captivated by this variety and the singular terroir of Bairrada from the 1990s onwards, leading him to search out small parcels of century-old vines around Cantanhede.
In the glass, the wine reveals a deep colour with light purple hues, a complex and fragrant aromatic profile of floral and fruity notes, hints of cherry and rhubarb, followed by spicy, balsamic and tobacco nuances. On the palate it is rich and expressive, with crisp acidity and velvety tannins, finishing long and delicately spiced. Only 8,000 bottles are produced, making this one of Niepoort's most sought-after and personal non-fortified wines — a bottle built equally for tonight and for the decades ahead. It is best enjoyed slightly chilled (15°C), in a Pinot Noir glass.
Food pairing
Delicious with roast lamb, sausage dishes, fried cod or vegetarian dishes with legumes

Grapes: 100% Baga
The grapes are sourced exclusively from the biodynamically farmed Quinta de Baixo, where the vineyards carry the SATIVA organic certification. The cool, Atlantic-influenced climate and clay-limestone soils create ideal conditions for the Baga grape to express its full potential. Harvest is done entirely by hand, and vinification takes place partly in open lagares and partly in closed tanks using carbonic maceration, before the wine ages in large barrels for around 20 months. It was bottled unfiltered

95/100 - James Suckling Tasted: Oct 2025
This has a perfumed nose of dried herbs and dried flowers with a ferrous edge. The palate is elegant and medium-bodied, with delicate dark fruit supported by chalky, precise tannins. A seamless and refined baga. Sourced from an old vineyard planted on calcareous soil in the Cantanhede area. Whole clusters with gentle extraction, aged for 25 months in neutral oak. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
