A stunningly delicious red wine with excellent value for money. The tempting spicy aroma of fruit and a touch of smoke leads to a soft, rich taste, with hints of dark plums, blackberries and herbs.
Ciconia is the Latin name for the white stork, a bird that loves to nest in the region and on the estate itself. The Alentejo is one of Europe’s best-known stork areas. Every spring the storks return to the cork oak forests and the open countryside around the vineyards. They build their large nests on trees, chimneys, church towers and electricity pylons. The name and the stork on the label are a nod to the nature and landscape the wine comes from. In Portugal, the white stork is also seen as a symbol of prosperity.

Food pairing
A lovely match for hearty stews and oven dishes, such as those made with goat meat, as well as grilled meats, burgers, pasta with tomato sauce, charcuterie and soft cheeses. At Mamaye, it also pairs beautifully with milder dishes like Alicha or Tibs. With spicier berbere-based wots, serve it slightly cooler.
Grapes: Touriga Nacional, Syrah & Aragonez
Mechanical harvest during the night, total destemming, fermentation in stainless steel vats with controlled temperatures, after a pre-fermentation maceration of 48 hours. Part of the wine aged in French oak barrels. The estate was purchased in 1997 by Alexandre Relvas Sr., and today his son, also named Alexandre, is in charge of the winemaking. The property covers around 175 hectares, roughly 35 of which are under vine. The family also owns a second vineyard and buys in additional grapes from growers in Borba.
