Food pairing
The ideal companion for game such as venison fillet, grilled rack of lamb with rosemary, Beef Wellington, beef stew, and mature hard cheeses. In Ethiopian cuisine, it pairs wonderfully with Doro Wot and Key Wot.

Grapes: Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz
The estate spans 170 hectares in the far east of the Douro Superior, approximately 12 km from the Spanish border. The vineyards are situated on rolling hills along the southern bank of the Douro River, rooted in schist soil. Each grape variety is planted on the specific plot best suited to it. Following the harvest, the grapes undergo maceration and fermentation in stainless steel tanks, with each variety vinified separately. The wine is then aged for 18 months in a mix of 50% new and 50% used oak barrels, after which the final blend is determined and the wine is bottled.

The 2022 vintage was one of the most challenging in the Douro in living memory, yet it still yielded wines of surprisingly high quality. It marked the fourth consecutive dry year; between November 2021 and August 2022, rainfall was about 70% below average, with all of Portugal grappling with severe drought since the winter. Compounding this was an exceptionally hot summer: July was the hottest July since 1931, with temperatures in Pinhão reaching 47°C—a national record. Several heatwaves brought days with temperatures exceeding 40°C.

Due to this intense heat, the harvest began earlier than ever before. In the Douro Superior, the first grapes were picked as early as August 22nd, and in mid-September, harvesting was paused for ten days to wait for rain. The grape clusters were lighter than usual, and the overall yield was approximately 15 to 20% lower. At Quinta da Leda, the yield was 13% lower than in 2021. The team kept the vines healthy through careful canopy management, irrigation, and the removal of excess grape clusters.

The results are impressive. The well-ripened grapes produced wines with deep color, mature tannins, and concentrated fruit—and, at the best estates, remarkably beautiful aromas as well. Winemaker Luís Sottomayor sums it up: “a very difficult year, but one of very good quality.”

Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional (with a slight predominance of the former), complemented by Tinto Cão and Sousão. The aroma is quintessentially Douro—a classic profile featuring notes of heather and rockrose, dark fruit, tobacco, and spice. On the palate, it is refined, with impeccable tannins and medium-high acidity; it feels creamy and smooth, leading to a flavorful finish.
