AMVD0319 Quinta Vale Dona Maria Vinha de Martim 2019 Branco

This field blend is fermented and aged in oak barrels, obtaining a rich full-bodied wine while maintaining the freshness of the vineyard - located at an altitude of 400 m. The wine is named after the small village of Martim and has a great complexity in its aromas, from ripe citrus fruits, such as ripe mandarins and ripe peaches, to the nuances of tropical fruits. The wine has subtle scents of almond blossom, a dense structure, mineral notes, a velvety body and a slightly woody aroma. This wine presents itself discreetly, before revealing a long and surprising finish, with an elegant persistence.

In 2015 they began exploring a unique vineyard, with an average age of over 80 years and with a huge diversity of white grape varieties. Vale D. Maria Vinha de Martim Douro Branco shows the unique and differentiated character of the different plots of old vines that are spread across the Douro. The feeling is to express in this wine the Douro that we have known for many centuries.

Grapes : Field blend of indigenous grape varieties mostly Rabigato, Gouveio, Samarrinho & similar grapes
The destemmed grapes are lightly crushed in a pneumatic press. The must is then transferred to 2,500-litre stainless steel vats for 24 hours at 10ºC and then transferred to new 225-litre French oak barrels. There, the must ferments for 25 days at a controlled temperature between 10ºC and 14ºC. Matured in these barrels for 9 months, with battonage.

The 2018/2019 vintage was particularly atypical: extremely dry, but abnormally cool. This allowed the vines to withstand the stress of the summer, despite the lack of water reserves in the soil. As the heat only occurred between the end of August and the beginning of September, there was no loss of production due to burning or drying out. The harvest began in early September and lasted until 10 October. As it was a cool year, ripening could proceed slowly. This allowed us to choose the ideal harvest moment for each vineyard plot, making the DOC Douro wines from the 2019 harvest of excellent quality.

18,5/20 - Grandes Escolhas Tasted: Jul 2021
94/100 - Andreas Larsson
Bright straw colour with a green hue. Discreet and pure nose with fine layers, discreet oak notes, gentle creaminess, fresh hazelnut, pale stone fruit and citrus notes. The palate is voluminous and fresh, packed with plenty of yellow fruit notes, lemongrass and a slight presence of fine oak and toast, long and warm finish with flinty and mouth watering finish.
