On the nose it has a rich toasty character with nuts, coffee and chocolate aromas topped with hints of orange peel, all combined together by fine wood maturation. Rich and soft on the palate full of ripe fruit flavours mingling with burnt sugar, caramel, molasses, raisin and toffee notes that persist on a long, complex and elegant finish. This is wonderful, luxurious captivating tawny port with a beautiful velvety texture and intensity but also has a lightness and edge of acidity that gives it energy.
In the easternmost part of the Douro, close to the Spanish border, we find Quinta do Vale Meão in the Douro Superior. This very famous quinta is the birthplace of Barca Velha, the best known and highly praised Portuguese wine. The quinta is owned by Francisco Javier de Olazabal, the great-great-grandson of Dona Antonia. The former director of the Porthuis Ferreira (until 1999) started producing wine from these exceptional vines with his son, oenologist Francisco de Olazabal y Almeida. and terroir. In 2000 they came on the market with a Vintage Port for the first time. Quinta do Vale Meão have been making fantastic port for many years. They don't bottle everything they make straight away, and leave a proportion to age in their cellars. After many years of this investment, they now have sufficient reserves to draw from and create this wonderful 10 year old tawny port. What sets this tawny apart is that it has been aged at the Quinta, in the Douro Superior. This means it shows a very different developmental character to other tawny ports, most of which are aged in Vila Nova de Gaia, far cooler by the coast! Quinta do Vale Meão belongs to the top of Portugal and you can taste why it is
